Kids Say The Darndest Things!

Children's Play : October 17 & 18 at 7:30 PM & October 19 at 2:30 PM

Concocted from the actual zany and oddly wise things that kids under the age of 12 have said, this rollicking entertainment covers all the bases: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "How did your mommy and daddy fall in love?" "Do you have any pets…brothers…sisters…secret ambitions?" "What would you say to the president?"

It is filled with the innocent wisdom that comes out of the "mouths of babes" and reminds us to look at the world with a kid's view. It is based on the hilarious best-selling book Kids Say the Darndest Things by Art Linkletter, inspired by the TV show House Party which ran 26 years, hosted by Mr. Linkletter. Only Agatha Christie could have conceived such a suspenseful thriller and then capped it with an uncanny triple flip ending. A young married man spends many evenings with a rich old woman. When she is found murdered, the naive young man is the chief suspect. The testimony of his wife is expected to result in an acquittal, but she is a shrew who damages his case and all but hangs him before a vindictive mystery woman appears with letters against the wife. After the man is freed, it is revealed that mystery woman is actually the wife. She discredited and perjured herself because she felt that direct testimony on her husband's behalf would not have been sufficient to free him. When he turns his back on his wife and goes off with another woman, we realize that he was the murderer. He does not get away it, for there is one turn of plot remaining.

Schoolhouse

Rock, Live!

AUDITIONS: MAY 18 & 19 FROM 5 TO 7 PMChildren's Musical: June 17 & 18 at 7:30 PM and July 19 at 2:30 PM

“Schoolhouse Rock” was an ABC TV series that enchanted late boomers and Gen Xers for thirteen seasons from 1973 to 1986, returning to the air in 1992. It developed a cult following, featured on  literally a dozen fan sites with the emergence of the Internet. It was referenced in motion pictures (“Reality Bites”, “Detroit Rock City”, “Never Been Kissed”) and in the ultimate form of tribute, spoofed by “The Simpsons”, “Family Guy” and Drew Carey.

What was “Schoolhouse Rock”? One of the select few of television series ever to possess redeeming social value, it was comprised of fifty-one animated short films that combined cartoon animation with bouncy pop songs with remarkably infectious hooks that addictively entertained while simultaneously educating its audience on a wide variety of subjects, including mathematics, science, American history, civics and government and even progressive gender politics ( via a segment on women’s suffrage and the contributions of women).

Despite being educational, it was, above all else, loads of fun. The music would be considered pop rather than rock by 2007 standards.

Gypsy!

AUDITIONS: MAY 18 & 19 FROM 7 TO 9 PMMUSICAL: August 7, 8, 14 & 15 at 8 PM and August 16 at 2:30 PM

Gypsy is a 1959 musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents. It is usually referred to as simply Gypsy.

Gypsy is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist, and focuses on her mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with "the ultimate show business mother." In particular, it follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise two daughters to perform onstage and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life. The character of Louise is based on Lee, and the character of June is based on Lee's sister, the actress June Havoc.

The musical contains many songs that became popular standards, including "Small World," "Everything's Coming up Roses", "You'll Never Get Away from Me," and "Let Me Entertain You." It is frequently considered one of the crowning achievements of the mid-20th century's conventional musical theatre art form, often called the "book musical."

Gypsy has been referred to as the greatest American musical by numerous critics and writers, among them Ben Brantley and Frank Rich.Rich even goes so far as to call it the American musical theatre's answer to King Lear. Theater critic Clive Barnes wrote that "Gypsy is one of the best of musicals...." He described the character of Rose as "one of the few truly complex characters in the American musical...."
